JCUP Fundraising Campaign Nears Completion
Efforts to raise money for JCUP are winding down. The project has secured more than $689,000 in pledges from various donors. View project and donor details here!
Approximately 85 percent of the project's fundraising goal has been met, thanks to local lawyers and law firms. According to Judge A. C. McKay Chauvin, this total includes $35,000 from the Jefferson County Public Law Library, the largest single financial commitment in the campaign.
Discussions began more than two years ago about how to bring jury trials in Jefferson Circuit Court into the digital age. A group of attorneys convened by Judge Chauvin recommended technological upgrades for each courtroom including ceiling-mounted projectors, dual projection screens, a document camera, CD/DVD player and touch-screen monitors with telestrator capabilities at both counsel tables and the witness stand.
JCUP was then formed as a nonprofit organization and a fundraising committee, headed by attorney Patrick W. Michael, began soliciting funds in the spring of this year to purchase the equipment. Enough money had been raised by summertime to equip Judge Chauvin’s courtroom as a prototype. In July, a series of programs were held to demonstrate the new system’s capabilities and stimulate additional financial support for the project’s expansion to other circuit courtrooms. A final fundraising push in the fall brought JCUP within sight of its goal.
JCUP’s fundraising success is a testament to the strength of the local trial bar and its resolve that all parties, regardless of their resources, have access to the most up-to-date communication methods when trying cases in Jefferson Circuit Court.
